影片根据Solomon Northup在1853年所著传记小说《黑奴十二年》（Twelve Years a Slave）改编。该作来自Solomon Northup亲身经历，他本是一个生活在纽约的自由的黑人，受过教育且已婚。随后遇到两个人，他们许诺在华盛顿帮他找一份工作，当Northup到了华盛顿才发现自己被诱拐绑架了，从此开始了他的奴隶生涯。经历多年磨难才依靠一个好心的加拿大人帮忙送信回家，经过一场诉讼，他重获自由。。Like every year, Jim, Ray, Brad and Paul leave the town for a week to go hunting in the woods.
